Smart Storage That Makes Every Inch Work Harder

A custom closet is one of the fastest ways to make a house feel finished. Sassafras designs and installs storage systems that bring real order to bedrooms, pantries, mudrooms and garages, with layouts built around your space and the way you actually live.

Sassafras Home Improvement has Delaware roots going back to 1963, when Bath Kitchen & Tile Center, now our showroom and design center, first opened its doors. We measure carefully, choose finishes that match the rest of your home, and install everything cleanly. The only thing left to do is enjoy a closet that finally makes sense.

What to Know Before You Design a Custom Closet

A great closet starts with a clear sense of what you actually own and how you actually use it. Here is what we walk every homeowner through during a closet design.

Inventory What You Actually Own

The best closet is built around your actual wardrobe, not a generic average. We look at how many long hanging items you have versus short, how many pairs of shoes, how much folded versus hanging, and what specialty items need a home. The design follows.

Where the Closet Lives

Bedroom closet, primary suite walk-in, pantry, mudroom, garage, linen, laundry. Each space has its own rules about depth, height, lighting and traffic. We design specifically for the room, not a one-size-fits-all kit.

Finishes That Match Your Home

Closet interiors should feel like part of the house. We bring samples of woods, laminates, hardware and accessories during your estimate so you can match the rest of your home’s finishes rather than fighting them.

Reach-In vs. Walk-In: Which Closet Type Suits You?

The first decision in a custom closet project is the closet type. Both work beautifully. The right one depends on your space, the room, and how you use it.

Option 1 — Reach-In:

The classic bedroom closet, opened from the outside. Reach-ins are efficient and surprisingly spacious once they are properly built out, with double-hang sections, shelving, drawers and shoe storage that triples typical capacity. The right choice for secondary bedrooms, guest rooms and any room without floor space to spare.

Option 2 — Walk-In:

A small room of its own. Walk-ins fit primary bedrooms or larger rooms where you have the square footage. Built-in islands, seating, mirrors, jewelry drawers and dedicated shoe walls turn the space into a dressing area. The right choice for primary suites and anywhere you want the closet to feel like a destination.

We design both during your free estimate so you can compare layouts in your actual space before you decide.

Most custom closets are designed, built and installed in two to four weeks from the start of your project. The on-site install itself is typically one day for a reach-in and one to two days for a walk-in.
Yes. Most closets are not perfectly square or symmetrical, and we design around what is there. Out-of-level floors, sloped ceilings, awkward corners and odd dimensions are all normal.
We offer a range of finishes including melamine laminates in wood and solid color tones, real wood options for premium projects, and a full set of hardware, drawer fronts and accessories. We bring samples to your estimate.
Yes, the closet needs to be empty for install day. We give you the date well in advance and most homeowners spend a Saturday morning clearing things out before our crew arrives.
Cost depends on the size of the closet, the materials you choose, and the accessories. A reach-in starts at one price range, a walk-in another. We give you a clear estimate during your free in-home visit.
Custom closets are one of the most consistently noted features by buyers and a frequent talking point in real estate listings. They typically add value far above their cost.
